What is Smelter Grade Alumina? - Smelter Grade Alumina

Atlantic Alumina, Gramercy Operations located in Gramercy, Louisiana, is the only major alumina refinery in the United States. Here at Atlantic Alumina, we import bauxite from our surface mining operation in Jamaica. The bauxite is then refined through a chemical process into alumina. The alumina that is extracted from our Jamaican bauxite is some of the highest quality alumina found and is used to create Atlantic’s smelter grade alumina (SGA) and chemical grade alumina (CGA). Many manufacturers use our smelter-grade alumina to produce aluminum, which is then used in countless industries, such as automotive, food, medical, and so many more. Chemical grade alumina, on the other hand, is a more versatile product that can be used in detergents, flame retardants, adhesives, paints, and more.

Smelter grade alumina, sometimes referred to as metallurgical grade, is the name given when smelting is used to manufacture aluminum metal. This is the process of applying heat to extract a base metal.

Smelter grade alumina accounts for 90% of all alumina produced, which is why it is so important to use good quality alumina. After producing our high-quality smelter grade alumina, Atlantic sells it to steel mills, where it is then used to make aluminum for cars, airplanes, and various other products.

If you are looking for a high-quality smelter grade alumina for your steel mill, then Atlantic is the place to look. Our alumina comes from the best bauxite mines in Jamaica, so your smelter grade alumina is sure to create top-quality aluminum metals for all your products.
